A Light Has Dawned in Darkness

The Kawangware slum on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya is a place of deprivation, despair, and disease. God called Kenyan Pastor David Kitonga and his wife Ann, giving them a vision to establish a rescue ministry in the center of over 300,000 souls perishing in this vast wasteland. They founded Africa Equip Ministry (AEM) and developed a holistic community outreach effort including the thriving Huduma Church, a Christian primary school for children in the slum who had no access to education, and job training schools for destitute men and women.

Why We Are Here
The people of Kawangware are largely uneducated, unemployed, and underutilized. Many are outcasts from society … others are involved in crime and prey on the weak. Rampant use of alcohol and drugs is evident creating an underground culture of depravity. Prostitution is common, further debasing women. However, in the last decade, the landscape of Kawangware has been dramatically transformed, as have the lives of thousands of its inhabitants!

Life Giving Hope Meets Significant Current Challenges, Recovering from Covid

The Swahili word Huduma means Hope – and the Huduma Church and the Huduma School are centers of daily life-giving programs and activities that have given real hope to the Kawangware people. More than 800 children were enrolled in the school, receiving a nutritious meal each day. However, with mandated school closings during Covid, and funding declines, the school now can only support 200 returning children and 10 teachers – and urgently needs funding to restore full enrollment and additional teachers.

In Kawangware

In Kawangware, compelling need always collides with resource limitations.  About 60% of the slum population are youth who have never attended school or are drop-outs. These young men and women need education and training to become self-sufficient. Funding is also needed to restore the micro-enterprise sewing and carpentry schools, which have trained and developed hundreds of successful businessmen and women.
